To wish someone a happy birthday at Christmas, say happy birthday first and merry Christmas second, and send it in a birthday card, not a Christmas one. People born in late December ask for exactly that in the Reddit and Quora threads Google shows for this search: a birthday of their own. Below are 68 wishes that do it, for Christmas Day and Christmas Eve birthdays, the rest of December, kids, family and cards that arrive late. Copy one and make it sound like you, or tap it to put it on a card with their face in it: $4.99, ready about 20 seconds after you pay.
Birthday first, Christmas second: what to write and when
Where their birthday falls changes what to lead with and when to send it. The rule is the same all month: the birthday gets its own words, and Christmas gets the last line or a card of its own.
| Their birthday | Lead with | Send it |
|---|---|---|
| December 1–20 | A plain birthday card. Christmas gets a separate card later. | On the day |
| December 21–23 | Birthday wishes; end with "see you at Christmas" if you like. | On the day, before anyone travels |
| Christmas Eve | Their day first. Christmas at the end, if at all. | In the morning, before the evening plans |
| Christmas Day | Only the birthday. Christmas in a second message, or as the last line. | First thing, before presents |
| December 26–30 | Birthday only, nothing festive. | On the day: the rush is over, so it gets noticed |
| New Year's Eve | Their day, then a short happy new year at the end. | During the day, before the parties |

How to write a Christmas birthday wish in three lines
"Happy 40th, Holly! Nobody else I know can parallel park in the snow on the first try. Have the best day, and save me some cake for Christmas." Three parts, in this order:
- Their name and the birthday, first. Not "Merry Christmas and happy birthday".
- One line about them that has nothing to do with the holidays: their year, something they're great at, a joke only you two get.
- Christmas last, in a few words, or in a separate card.
What people with Christmas birthdays ask for
People born in late December ask for the same few things. These come from the Reddit and Quora threads Google shows for "birthday on Christmas", and from two parenting pieces on December birthdays: Romper's, by Jamie Kenney, a Christmas baby (2018), and Everyday Reading's, by Janssen Bradshaw (2019).
- Two presents, not one "this is for both" gift. All three sources say it first.
- Birthday wrapping paper, not Christmas paper.
- A party earlier in December, or a half-birthday in summer. Ask first: some kids care about the real date.
- A real birthday cake, not a holiday-themed one, and their birthday mentioned through the month so it doesn't get lost (Romper).
- The card follows the same rule: the birthday on its own, with Christmas as the last line or in a card of its own.
What not to write
Lines that land badly:
- "Sorry your birthday is so close to Christmas." Pointing at the timing only makes it worse, Romper's Jamie Kenney says.
- "This counts for both." Not on a card, and not on a gift.
- Christmas greetings as the opening words.
- A holiday joke as the whole message. One is fine, after the birthday part.
How it works
- Pick a cardPilots, mermaids, rock stars, one very surprised cake. Every one shows a real example first.
- Add their photosOne clear face each, up to 5 people. A selfie is fine. No sign-up.
- See it free, then payOne picture of them in the card in about 10 seconds. Like it? Apple Pay or Google Pay, and four pictures arrive about 20 seconds later, the video in about 90.
How do you say happy birthday and merry Christmas in one card?
Birthday first, Christmas last and short: "Happy 30th, Noel! I hope today is all about you. And have a great Christmas." If you can, send the Christmas card separately a day or two later, so the first card is only about them.
What do you say to someone whose birthday is on Christmas Day?
Start with their birthday, before anything about Christmas, and send it early in the day, before presents and dinner take over. One specific line beats a long one: "Happy birthday, Carol! The 25th has been better ever since you showed up."
Should you give one present for a December birthday and Christmas?
No. A combined gift is the thing people with Christmas birthdays mind most. Romper's Jamie Kenney, a Christmas baby, says a combination present is a way of saying you didn't get them a birthday present. Give two, wrap the birthday one in birthday paper, and keep it away from the tree.
What do you write in a late Christmas birthday card?
Own it in a few words, then make it about them: "Happy belated birthday! The holidays ate my week, but not my wish for you." After the 25th, a late card doesn't have to compete with the Christmas pile.
Can I send a birthday card with their face in it?
Yes. Tap a wish, add a clear photo of them and pay. HiWith puts them in a birthday scene, like popping out of a giant cake, or a snow globe if they love Christmas, and adds your line. It's $4.99 for four pictures and a short video, ready about 20 seconds after you pay. A card you buy keeps working, so you can make it early and send the link on their birthday.
